Africa’s
safari season
Africa’s safari season is defined not by summer
or winter, but by wet season and dry season. The tropical
storms that darken the African skies during the seasons
of rain are often torrential but short-lived, bringing
welcome relief from the heat. These months of rain
quench the parched savannas and woodlands, which burst
with new growth, providing Africa’s wildlife
with nourishment and cover. Wildlife disperses into
the wilderness, never far from an abundance of water
and food.
In harsh contrast, during the
dry season rainfall is scarce and the savannas are
trampled by vast herds of antelope, elephant and buffalo,
driven by a desperate need for nourishment and water.
A daily struggle for survival unfolds. The full drama
of the African wilderness plays out along riverbanks
and at waterholes.
